Unformatted text preview: eanup o Found in both plant and animal cells however, more lysosomes are needed in animal cells needed Cytoskeleton Cytoskeleton- a network of protein filaments o Microfilaments and microtubules are two of the principal protein filaments that make up the cytoskeleton filaments Microfilaments - threadlike structures made up of a protein called actin Microfilaments o Form extensive networks in cells and produce a tough, flexible framework that supports the cell framework Microtubules - hollow structures made up of proteins called tubulins o Also important in cell division Centrioles are located near the nucleus and help to organize cell division o Not found in plants Organelles that Build Proteins Ribosomes Ribosomes- small particles of RNA and protein found throughout the cell o Follow coded instructions that come from DNA Follow o Each ribosome turns out proteins on orders that come from ‘the boss’ Endoplasmic Reticulum ER - lipid components of the cell membrane are assembled, along with proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell proteins Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth ER- contains collections of enzymes that perform specialized tasks, including the synthesis of membrane lipids and the detoxification of drugs including Rough ER- involved in the synthesis of proteins o Ribosomes found on its surface Ribosomes Golgi Apparatus Proteins produced in the rough ER move next into the Golgi apparatus, which appears as a stack of flattened membranes which o Golgi Bodies o Golgi Complex Golgi Apparatus The Golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages the final protein products o UPS of the cell Organelles that Capture & Release Energy Mitochondria Mitochondria- power plants of the cell o They convert the chemical energy stored in food into energy compounds compounds Two membranes—an outer membrane and an inner membrane—enclose mitochondria mitochondria Chloroplasts Chloroplast – function as solar panels in plants solar Utilized in the process of photosynthesis Utilized Two membranes surround chloroplasts which contain the green pigment chlorophyll chlorophyll Cell Wall- serves as a form of protection and added support o Allows for the passing of some substances Water, carbon dioxide, Allows oxygen and others oxygen Found in plant cells Found in prokaryotic cells Cell Membrane Lipid bilayer - two layers of lipids o Hydrophilic head [water-loving] o Hydrophobic tail [water-hating] Also called the plasma membrane Selectively permeable- s...
