Summarize the argument we have provided in claiming that this is a book you should take seriously. Because arguments play a pervasive role in our lives, so a book about arguments should be taken seriously. Exercise 1B 1. Each of the following passages presents a simple argument. In each case, identify the premise(s) and conclusion. (i) A clear increase in earthquakes and other natural catastrophes [Premise] creates a com- pelling case for curbing our thirst for fossil fuels [Conclusion] (iii)Feral cats are a major problem for urban centres [Conclusion] . They carry disease, they fight, and they destroy wildlife [Premise] . (v) [Adapted from a Letter to the Editor, Popular Science , March 2011, p. 12] In “Flapper Fashion” you state, “Last August . . . marked the first time a human-powered aircraft achieved sustained flight.” No. [Conclusion: Last August did not mark the first time a human-powered aircraft achieved sustained flight.] Paul MacCready and Peter Lissman of AeroVironment, Inc. built the Gossamer Condor , which in 1977 won the Kremer Priveze for the first human-powered aircraft capable of controlled sustained flight [Premise] . Exercise 1C 3. The following are quotes relevant to arguments. In each case, construct a profile of the writer by explaining some of the beliefs that can be attributed to them. (i) [From Skeptic magazine, “What is Naturopathy,” Vol. 16, No. 2, 2011, p. 4] Naturopathy arose in a pre-scientific environment, then lost popularity as scientific medicine developed effective treatments during the 20th century. It had a resurgence in the 1970s as part of the trend of so-called “alternative” medicine. It is currently taught in six schools in the U.S. and licensed in 15 states.”

He or she is a skeptic about naturopathy and alternative medicine in general. But the writer is also knowledgeable about the issue and has an understanding of the issue.
