Phys2211KGeorgia State UniversityMotion Diagrams to Position and Velocity GraphsApparatus:Aluminum track and a support, cart, plastic ruler, tape timer, and pencilObjectives:1) To be familiar with using motion diagrams.2) To be familiar with displacement, time interval, instantaneous velocity, average velocityand average acceleration.3) To extract information from kinematic graphs.Part A: Creating a Motion DiagramIn this experiment we’ll create a motion diagram for a cart traveling down an inclined plane(aluminum track).To do that we’ll use a ticker tape timer that produces a dot on a strip ofpaper at even time intervals.The tape timer is set at 10 Hz to produce a motion diagramfor the cart moving down the incline plane.This means that the time interval betweensuccessive points is0.10 s.Watch the video() for thedescription of the function of the ticker tape timer apparatus and the creation of a motiondiagram on the tape.You will be collecting your data directly from the video.Part B: Measurement and Analysis of Motion Diagrams1.Use the meter stick shown to establish a coordinate system for the motion diagramand locate the position of each dot. You may read the position to 1mm accuracy.Create a table with time and position data in an Excel spread sheet.Your firstdata point should be a couple of time intervals after the cart started to move.Yourlast data point should be before anyone touched the cart to stop it.2.Using your data, calculate the average velocity of the cart for the entire run.Don’tforget about units without using Excel.
