ONLINE ETIQUETTE The primary means of communication in this course will be discussion boards and email. These are text-based means of communication. Written communication is not the same as face-to-face communication. Sometimes we may be tempted to write things that we would never say to a person’s face. Written communication can also sometimes be misconstrued. What we write down may be interpreted to mean something else by others. Consequently, it is important to respect each other as colleagues when communicating online. The following guidelines should be followed: Respect others and their opinions. Your fellow students come from various backgrounds. It is important to respect their feelings and opinions though they may differ from your own. Unprofessional messages will be removed. Consider others’ privacy. Be wary of your discussion topics and how private or open they may be. Pick the right tone. It is especially important to choose the right words to get your meaning across. For example, sarcasm is harder to detect when you read the words rather
