English 131 Prof. Stephen Harris Jack Kerouac Beat Generation Kerouac was someone who was the man for his time and place. He led the 1950’s “Beat” movement – partially against his better wishes – but nonetheless his face was the front of the movement. The BEATS wanted to REJECT CONFORMIST SOCIETY. The Beat movement was the generation between the Second World War and the ‘hippie’ generation. They had a rebellious way about them – they had an angst in the slanted way they viewed their existence. They were writers, poets, and other free spirits banding together to live in a more free, uncluttered way. “Sex, drugs, and Zen” is there a potential for a better life? A more meaningful one?
