RUNNING HEAD: Simplifying This assignment consists of simplifying equations using different steps to complete each task. In the first equation, I will show how I used the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY to REMOVE THE PARENTHSIS , and SIMPLIFY the equation. 1. 2a(a – 5) + 4(a – 5) 2a x a= 2a 2 Distributive Property with combining like terms 2a x -5= -10a using multiplication to simplify the equation. 2a 2 -10a 4 x a = 4a 4 x -5= -20 2a 2 -10a+4a-20 SIMPLIFIED: 2a 2 -6a-20 2. In problem two, I was able to combine LIKE TERMS . I used the COEFFICIENT of W to remove it completely from the equation. 2w – 3 + 3(w – 4) – 5(w – 6) Using the Distributive Property 3 x w – 3 x -4 Of multiplication, addition, and subtraction 3w - 12 -5 x w -5 x -6 -5w+30 2w -3+3w-12-5w+30 Combine like terms 2w+3w-5w-3-12+30 3+2=5-5=0

In what ways are they useful for simplifying algebraic expressions? Knowing all the properties of real numbers in algebra is imperative because you must be able to use these properties in order to properly put expressions and equations into their simplest form by moving terms around to solve or simplify the expression. Distribution is used to multiply across terms inside parentheses, allowing you to remove the parentheses for the problem.
