Desiree Wilcox 10/23/07 Psychology #3 Motivation Sugarman’s Silverware Factory has recently let nearly twenty employees go due to their poor performance at work. On top of this great loss, the current five hundred employees lack motivation, and continually slack off or do not show up to work at all. The factory also has thirty administrators who have not been accountable for all the responsibilities assigned to them. As a result of these circumstances, a plan must be designed to increase the motivation of both the staff and the employees. Depending on the situation at hand, there are various theories of what would cause an individual to be motivated. The incentive theory, for example, involves motivation based on an external stimulus. The stimuli can be anything, from money to sex, or even gaining trust from another individual. Also, the incentive theory can imply that a person will be unmotivated from doing an activity if the result will be unpleasant, contrary to participating in the activity if the result were to be pleasing to them (Bernstein & Nash, 2008). For this reason, the incentive theory depends on an individual’s personal preference of what they believe to be a desirable outcome. If one were to view money as a desirable incentive, that individual would be motivated to work in order to earn money.
