Mental Health and High School Students2AbstractOne in five high school students around the world are suffering from some form of depression.Students are returning to school after being home from school since March 15, 2020.Now morethan ever, educators have to come together and educate themselves on the warning signs ofstudents that need some form of intervention.Students are suffering academically, socially, andmentally from these illnesses’.Therefore, educators have to come together and form effectivemental health models so that more students will be successful in school and in life.Keywords:depression, coping, and anxiety
Mental Health and High School Students3Mental Health Among High School Students ProblemOne in five children struggle with mental health conditions and suicide is the thirdleading cause of death for people ages 10 to 24.Mental illness impacts school performance andreduces the quality of life.It’s critical that we focus on children and youth who are vulnerableand may face delayed access to mental health treatment, especially in today’s society since weare currently locked down due to Covid 19.Mental health issues among school-aged students isan age old problem that needs fixing.Mental health is a person’s psychological condition andemotional well-being.In order for a student to be prosperous in school, they have to have ahealthy well-being.Over the past decade or so, I have noticed that more and more of mystudents are suffering from mental health issues and these issues need to be addressed.Thisproblem needs to be further researched because a large number of students suffer from anxiety,depression, and other mental health issues.These issues are standing in the way and keepingsome students from performing to their potential.According to Eisenberg, D., Gollust, S. E.,Golberstein, E., & Hefner, J. L. (2007) mental health problems can affect a student's energylevel, concentration, dependability, mental ability, and optimism, hindering performance.Research suggests that depression is associated with lower grade point averages and that co-occurring depression and anxiety can increase this association. Depression has also been linkedto students dropping out of school.Awareness of mental health issues among high school students is important because it istaking a toll on students around the world.The health of the students is being affected.Theirgrades are suffering.Also, some students are taking drugs to numb the pain.More importantly,some students are even committing suicide to put a permanent end to their pain.So furtherresearch has to be conducted to help save our students lives.
