Alray Cromer 9/27/2010 Paper Assignment #1 CRS 287 Knowledge of self/world PhD Rodriguez T.A. Heather My origins and first existence began in Charleston, West Virginia. With two parents Carol Johnson – Cromer and Robin Cromer as my guardians. These individuals set the stage for the duration of my life. My upbringing, mental states of mind, emotional, and physical attributes were already predetermined by my parent’s genetic chromosomes that are ingrained in me. It began on August 23, 1991 at 2:20 a.m. This was my first experience outside the wound into a world unfamiliar and weird to me. But my parents were the ones who kept me grounded and on the right path. My first knowledge of self I encountered was coming into a new world with all these lights and people in my face. As the times grew on and my mental capabilities developed myself knowledge began to be constructed. One of the first experiences I can recall how it affected me was participating in little league baseball and pop-Warner football for the Newburgh, New York Steelers. I was unaware of my true capabilities and due to my physical structure at the time I had a low self-esteem and virtually no self confidence. The only thing I was sure about was my intellectual ability, my ability to catch on to new tasks, and my ability to excel in the classroom. But I had to find out that these attributes that are applied to the classroom and workplace can’t be transmitted to the baseball diamond and the gridiron football field. The smart aspect I could apply to these sports but that has nothing to do with the translation to your performance on the field. Sure you can memorize the plays in your playbook, know the assignments you have to do on each play, and the reads and blocks you have to execute in order for you running back or quarterback to have enough space to do what they are there to do and that’s score a touchdown. But that has nothing to do with your athletic abilities. Anyone can do that but the difference is actually being able to execute your schemes assigned by your coach. That takes physical ability and technique not the intellectual abilities I was learning in the classroom. So as the practices for the baseball went underway I gained a little self- confidence. I know knew I had athletic ability. I knew I could hit the ball hard and had a strong enough arm to be the starting third baseman, a position known for athletes with accurate, powerful, explosive capabilities. So I began gaining self confidence and I began to know my own capabilities and the knowledge I attained about myself in baseball. I remember in one of my baseball championship games my team was down 6 to 1 in the sixth inning to the best team in the league, the Orioles. That left my team with only three innings to turn our five point deficit into a championship win. This was going to be a hard fate against the number one defense in the league. As I took the plate my mind and heart moving one hundred miles a miles a minute, I was nervous. I didn’t want to be the player on the team to mess up our potential chance at a victory.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
