ST 351 Winter 2008 Assignment 1 – 42 points Due beginning of your lecture on January 18th Put your name, lab day and lab time on the first page of your assignment CAREFULLY READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper in complete sentences. All answers must be typed . Handwritten work will not be graded. Remember to staple your assignment if it’s more than one page. Unstapled assignments will not be graded. Please refer to the syllabus regarding assignments that are not turned in by the stated deadline, but make the following adjustment: This assignment will be accepted as late if turned in (slide under my door, Kidder 53) by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 22. Later assignments will not be accepted. Do not email your assignment without checking with me first. 1. (17 points total) Does the temperature in an office affect the productivity, measured in the time taken to enter a list of numbers onto a spreadsheet, of clerical workers? A business consultant conducts an experiment to investigate. a) (1 point) What is the population(s) of interest? b) (1 point) What is the variable of interest? c) (3 points) Design and describe a study in which a random sample would be used to answer the question of interest. d) (3 points) Design and describe an observational study that could be used to answer the question of interest. e) (7 points) Design and describe a practical experiment that could be used to answer the question of interest. Be detailed. Your discussion should include (but is not limited to) the following: What the experimental unit is What the “treatment” is How randomization is to be used How you controlled for possible confounding variables What blinding is in an experiment and how it might be incorporated into your experiment f) (2 points) Why would an experiment be the best type of study to use to answer the question of interest? 2. (13 points total) Most television news stations report exit poll results during or shortly after national elections. These polls are supposed to help us determine the winner before ballots are counted, and give demographic information about voters and their votes. Go to the end of this homework and read the article Exit Polling From Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International (from http://www.exit- poll.net/exit_polling.html ).
