GenChem Co Industries 170 Main St. Aurora, NY 13026 Dear Davida Koester, The chemists at GenChem Co Industries are pleased to respond to your inquiry regarding the neutralization powers of various antacids. The three products investigated were Tums, Rolaids, and Alkamints. The results of multiple experiments show that all three products were incorrect in their claims that each can neutralize “over 64 times its weight in excess stomach acid”. Stomach acid is about 0.4% HCl, a strong acid which causes pain in discomfort. In order to test the neutralizing capacities, first the strong base (NaOH) and strong acid (HCl) were standardized, meaning the concentrations were found. This step is crucial for later when the neutralizing capacities of the antacids are determined. 10mL of a known concentration of HCl was added to 250mL of water which decreased its concentration from 0.5M to 0.005M. Next, three samples of KHP weighing between 0.3 and 0.5g each were dissolved in 50mL of water with 2 drops of phenolphthalein per flask. About 5g of NaOH was dissolved in 250mL water.
