De Lisha Paul HIST-1301-03 – United States History I Mr. Raymond Fogg Response Paper #1 The first excerpt that was read was named “The Journal of Christopher Columbus” [CITATION Mar93 \l 1033 ]. This excerpt documented and described events that took place during Columbus’ first voyage. The second document was named “The Story of the Virgin of Guadalupe” [CITATION Wil10 \l 1033 ] and this excerpt shows us why an Aztec man converted to Christianity. This essay will describe and compare these excerpts to help the readers understand why and how these events took place. The first excerpt, which was written by Clements R. Markham, spoke about the accounts of events from Christopher Columbus himself when the Europeans first encountered the Native Americans. The accounts that were taken from his journal showed up the intentions they had in store for the Native peoples. He wanted to use them for the gain of their economy. The Native Americans were generally poor, and this is how the Europeans gained access them. They bribed them with things they knew they did not have or things they wanted. For example, the Native Americans had no idea of what weapons were. When the Europeans showed them a sword, they cut themselves because they were not aware of how it was used.
