Culture 200 languages spoken in us Most brought by immigrants Global about 7,000 But declining Elements of culture Symbol-anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share a culture Ex| whistle, wall of graffiti fur coat- Us means success others inhuman treatment of animals Language -Helen Keller- blind and deaf -teacher Ann Sullivan used sign language to communicate with her -key to world of culture -a system of symbols that allows ppl to communicate w/one another Cultural transmission- process by which one generation passes cultural to the next Sapir-whorf thesis- ppl see and understand the world through the cultural lens of language Values and believe
