Khadijah Peek CRS 535 Assignment 4 April 12 th , 2012 I realize that there are two types of communities in this world . The community that is idealistic (that most people trick themselves into thinking they have) and the community that is realistic and present . I know that sometimes I have fallen in the realm of denying the realistic community and only seeing what I want to see . This presents a problem many times because when an undeniable truth comes along; my idealistic safety net of how I wanted to see things comes crashing down . In The Hadith and The New Testament, these two religious texts give us the ideal life to live and how humans should treat each other . However, both of these texts are not so indicative of the times we are living in . If I were to be truthful in describing how community is in the world today, I would say that it seldom exists . I don’t see people laying down their lives for each other, I don’t see many people giving generous amounts of money from their pockets unless there is something reciprocated for it, and I don’t see unconditional love for one another . I’ve never seen the “community” outlined in the Hadith or New Testament, present in my life . I may have seen pieces of passages exhibited in people’s actions towards one another, but never have I seen the ideal community exhibited . I struggle everyday with the whole concept of community and what it means to be a community . I talk about my friend a lot, but honestly ever since he was killed my whole life changed and my perception on a lot of things is different . Before he died, I thought there was hope for many things . I thought people could come together and be able to fix the communities

in which they lived . I knew people were still getting killed, but I never gave up hope . Back in Albany, I work for a non for profit organization called 15-love . In this organization we give free tennis lessons to all ages . However, we mainly focus on the children . After their tennis lesson we give them a thirty minute session known as “off-court . ” In this session we talk to them about various things from etiquette to peer pressure to drugs . The motto of 15-Love is “Giving Kids the Advantage . ” Through this we see the effect we have on kids, as they learn that they have more than the options that the “hood” shows them that they have . We believe that we can incite change in the community by impacting the everyday lives of these children . Since we give them positive outlets and alternatives to what is the norm in their lives . Having certain programs like this in the city of Albany, always gives me confidence that this place can turn itself around and that community does care about each other’s well-being . Unfortunately, 15-Love couldn’t save every life .

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
