WEEK 10: FINAL PROJECT2 Population and Presenting Problem Adolescents comprise the focus population, and the presenting problem is depression. According to recent statistics, adolescents constitute the most significant population bracket in many nations across the globe. In the United States, for instance, over 42 million adolescents are representing about 12.9% of the total population. According to Davaasambuu et al. (2019), adolescents are individuals between the ages of thirteen and nineteen, which is often regarded as a transitional age from childhood to adulthood. However, some studies have argued that psychological characteristics associated with adolescence can begin as early as nine years. Given that most adolescents are in school and still living with their parents, many of their issues tend to go unnoticed. Studies have indicated that similar to other groups, adolescents also tend to go through specific life difficulties or experience particular conditions that impact them negatively. Depression is one of these challenges. Depression is a mental health condition that is associated with high-level stress and affects how one thinks, feels, and acts (Lindsey et al., 2017). It results in sadness and withdrawal from favorite activities. Although depression is often linked with older adults, adolescents experience this mental disorder as well. Adolescents encounter depression because of their environment, interaction with their families, and peers. For instance, adolescents tend to meet stress factors such as exams, financial hardships, and relationship challenges that grow into a depression over time. Therefore, it is essential to get sufficient background or literature review about depression in adolescents to establish the appropriate, and evidence-based intervention approaches to address this concern.
WEEK 10: FINAL PROJECT3 Literature Review Numerous studies have presented exciting findings of depression in adolescents. According to Lindsey et al. (2017), depression in adolescents has increased significantly in recent years, mainly due to the skyrocketing financial challenges. Many families are experiencing massive financial difficulties, thus preventing parents from providing specific fundamental needs such as food, shelter, and education to their children. Because of this, many adolescents have been forced to take up various parental roles, such as taking care of their siblings, something that has subjected them to depression. Also, the poverty situation has forced many adolescents or teenagers to drop out of school and resort to the street. All these have contributed to the increasing rate of depression among this group. The author added that some parents have also neglected their children by denying them adequate time, thus leading the teenagers to develop several depressive disorders.
