September 6 th , 2006 Soci201-16 Victor Perez Sociology is a social science o Some argue that a social science should be objective and that sociological work is inherently biased (what we choose to study, how we approach it, what you do with the results you find). o While we know that sociology can never be bias free, the scientific method is still useful in studying sociology. o Reality does not exist out of some sort of paradigm or perspective. Sociological knowledge is recursive, it is never static o The knowledge we produce about society can change it to the point where the previous knowledge is irrelevant everything we know about society can be changed. Earl Babie 10 points about society not set in stone: o Society has sui generis o Society is a social science Auguste Comte- social positivist (believed in an objective reality) Coined the term “sociology” in 1838 If we figure out the general laws of sociology, then we can predict and control society. o
