ENC 1102 Spring 2008 THE PERSONAL ESSAY: GENRES We’ve talked quite a bit about personal writing. I’ve claimed that we’re going for a type/form of essay that is a hybrid of the academic essay and the personal essay. This claim is, at best, a half-truth—largely because genres themselves are so difficult to define. I can reasonably propose that the academic essay is the personal essay, vice versa. The academic essay is often split into various subcategories (types of academic essays), including but not limited to argumentative, persuasive, literary analysis, analysis of a definition, reader response, and expository. On the other hand, the personal essay is never really discussed as having (sub)genres. Yet, if we consider genres of essay-writing and try to include personal essays, we are forced to consider larger principles of writing and thereby some of the genres we can come up with make more sense….Then, we can further hybridize. Here are some subgenres of the personal essay that I’ve labeled:
