How might a hero be depicted in the culture of a terrorist group like Al-Queda? How might a hero in America be depicted? Anglo-Saxon Heroes: courage, strength, skill with weapons, doesn’t retreat, follows a code, motivated by fame, revenge, helping others, generosity with rewards. Epic Heroes: greater abilities, mortal, wiser, loyal following, love for country, overcomes rebellion, increasing obstacles. Heroes repay lords with their lives, suffer exile and disgrace if they don’t aid their lord, rewards of gold/fame for loyalty An Epic is a long narrative poem, sometime developed orally, that celebrates the deeds of a legendary or heroic figure. The hero battles forces that threaten the order of his world. The story is told in a serious manner, often in a special, elevated language. Beowulf = A Geat from Sweden who crosses the sea to Denmark in a quest to rescue King Hrothgar from the demonic monster Grendel. Epic Poem was written in the 8 th Century Action takes place in the 6 th Century Beowulf is a Geat from Sweden who is going to Denmark to save King Hrothgar.
