Unformatted text preview: Purpose: To determine a relationship between magnetic field and current in a solenoid as well as to determine a relationship between the magnetic field and the number of turns per meter in a solenoid. Another purpose is to determine the experimental value of the permeability constant, μ o . Procedure: 1. Connect field sensor to the ULI and set to high. 2. Stretch slinky to 1.3 m in length. 3. Set up Figure 1. Turn the power on and adjust the current so the ammeter reads 0.5 A with the switch closed. a. Close the switch only when measuring current and calibrating ammeter 4. Place sensor between the turns in the slinky, near the center of it’s length. 5. Orient sensor to point directly down the solenoid axis. 6. With the sensor in position and the switch open, zero the reading on the sensor. Click collect data. 7. Close switch for 10 seconds during collection. 8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 increasing the current by 0.5 A increments until 2.0 A is reached 9. Set up Figure 1. Set current to 1.0 A with the switch closed....
