BIOL 1510 Fall 2007 Gross vs. Net Primary Production Gross primary production (GPP). The total quantity of energy trapped by primary producers and converted to biomass. Net primary production (NPP). The energy/biomass retained in excess of primary producer respiration. NPP = GPP - respiration. On an ecosystem level, NPP represents the resource base for the entire community.
