Bhavi Patel 3/7/11 AP English Their Eyes Were Watching God is an extraordinary novel by Zora Neale Hurston. This novel is filled with a variety of motifs from work and money to the more natural aspects of our world like hair and sexuality. These motifs are used to express the complex themes and purposes of the novel itself. Out of the many motifs Hurston introduces into the novel, power and hair seem to have a great impact on the novel as a whole. The novel starts off with Janie’s nanny, forcing Janie to get married to a well settled man whom Janie does not love and knows that she will never be capable to love a man like him. Janie’s Nanny believes that if Janie marries a man who has complete power over his life style then Janie will have a happy life and would not have to suffer through what she had suffered through when she was her age. However, Janie ends up leaving her first husband, Logan, for a man who she thinks she loves, Jody. Janie sure loves Jody, but Jody has his own dreams to fulfillment. Jody attempts to achieve fulfillment through the exertion of power unlike Janie who attempts to achieve fulfillment by finding love and self-awareness. Jody attempts to purchase land and tries to control everyone around him, including his wife, Janie. He becomes mayor of a small town

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
