60’s Counterculture College-age youth generation o Different perspective than their parents No hardship of depression No trauma of WWII and Korean War No threat of communism o Many from middle class homes Financially comfortable as teens o Many rejected values of group “establishment” Bigoted, conservative, materialistic, obsessed w/deadly arms race, and clueless about sexuality o Incited a social revolution o 4 dominant issues: minority rights, sexual freedom, drug use, and war Minority rights Success of civil rights mvmt created momentum for other groups: women, Chicanos, gays, Native Americans Production of The Pill fueled sexual revolution Freed women to be as sexually active as males w/o risk of pregnancy Revival of feminism Recreational use of mind-altering drugs Marijuana commonly used LSD preffered drug b/c of mind opening possibilities o Timothy Leary promoted use to awaken individual to higher states of consciousness Vietnam War replaced civil rights as protest mvmt N & S Vietnam divided
