Jewish Religion & Culture January 30, 2008 I. First Temple a. Initially when ppl were wandering made tabernacle-(symbol of covenant) b. King David- hero of Jewish history; returns ark of covenant after it was taken by philistines i. Davidic Covenant - (not literal b/c no condition for David) 1. David cannot build a temple 2. God is happy in the Tabernacle for the time being 3. Future security= God will allow one of David’s son to be King and build a temple a. Important because kingship was not usually hereditary- Saul’s son was not made King c. Solomon- son of David i. I Kings- describes building of Temple 1. Chapter Eight- dedication of Temple a. Little piece of poetry= Solomon’s declaration b. Cloud (presence of Lord) c. Tells story of DC d. Verse 27= how can God have permanent home if he is present everywhere? e. Temple will be used for sacrifices & prayer f. Site for management of ppl’s relationship w/God ii. Solomon must obey God in order to keep DC d.
