Review of Reading- Article #15 1. This article is about an agency called Alternatives for Girls. Alternatives for Girls is devoted to helping at risk girls in the Detroit area. “AFG was founded with the mission of offering alternatives to teenage girls and young women of southwest Detroit who are homeless, living on the street, and involved with prostitution, substance abuse, and other activities on the street that threaten their health, development, and sometimes their lives; and to area girls of any age who are at high risk of becoming so involved.” (pg. 237) In December 1985, a group of 12 to 15 people from the community came together to discuss their concerns about these girls. The organization got its real start in June 1986; they created their name, elected a Board of Directors, and raised funds to begin their work. When AFG was given a grant in January 1987, two part-time social workers were hired to determine what programs were available in the community, and what else needed to be
