Miriam Khan 1/28/08 Organic Chemistry Lab Experiment 11: Bromination The objective of this lab was to observe the results of bromination to cis- and trans- stilbene. The color changes observed during the experiment during the bromination of cis- stilbene and trans-stilbene is that the color went from dark red to yellow and then to white and pasty. When dark red color faded, the reaction that was taking place was the bromine reacting with the double bonds in the cis-stilbene or trans-stilbene. Depending on the side of the compound the bromine ion attacks, depends on whether the product is cis or trans. The products were not extracted properly as the product yielded 150% with both trans- and cis- stilbenes. This is due to error. Most likely the water wash did not decompose all of the pyridinium tribromide. Due to this error, this was caught in the vacuum with the stilbene product, increasing the product mass. You can also tell an error occurred because the melting points are slightly off target meaning another substance is mixed in. The melting point of cis-stilbene was
