Wellness matters. Wellness matters because everything we do and everyemotion we feel relates to our well-being. In turn, our well-being directly affects ouractions and emotions. It’s an ongoing circle. Therefore, it is important for everyone toachieve optimal wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce the risk of illness and ensurepositive interactions.The Difference Between Health and WellnessAccording to theWorld Health Organization, “Health is a state of completephysical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease orinfirmity.” In other words, your health is about much more than physical ailments — it'sabout emotional and social fitness, too.On the other hand,wellness isthe “active process of becoming aware of and makingchoices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. [...] a dynamic process of change and growth.”The two concepts are not opposites, but rather go hand in hand in one’s quest towardcomplete well-being.Essentially, if health is the goal, wellness is the way we might achieve it.Wellness is the action while (good) health is the desired outcome.Emotional WellnessDefinition of Emotional WellnessEmotional wellness inspires self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the developmentof inner strength. It is important to be attentive to both positive and negative feelings andbe able to understand how to handle these emotions. Emotional wellness also includesthe ability to learn and grow from experiences. Emotional well-being encouragesautonomy and proper decision making skills. Once you accept yourfeelings, you can begin to understand why you are feeling that way, and decide how youwould like to act in response to those feelings. Being emotionally well grants you thepower to express feelings without any constraints. In turn, you will be able to enjoyemotional expression and be capable of forming supportive and interdependentrelationships with others.
