Under US GAAP and Canadian ASPE, revaluation of property, plant, and equipment to fair value is prohibited. IFRS permit companies to value property, plant, and equipment at historical cost or to revalue them to their fair value as of the statement of financial position date. Research and Development Expense – Not an Intangible Asset If an intangible asset is developed internally, the cost of development normally is recorded as research and development expense .
