Yasmin Ahmad 2-13-13 English 161/TR 9:30-10:45 WP 1 Summary Dirty Spaces: Separation, Concealment, and Shame In this text written by Ruth Barcan; which states in the text is that she a cultural studies educator, she discusses how separation, concealment, and shame intersect with dirty spaces. Also in this passage she uses the words separation and concealment to describe spaces, and shame to describe dirt/dirty in relation to the title. Barcan's main argument is underpinned by two metaphors which are "spatial metaphor of boundary and the metaphorical cluster around dirt." The meaning of dirty space is basically used as another name for public bathrooms. As Barcan argues in the text that " the two metaphors interest, since the function of boundaries is, precisely, to prevent the spread of dirt( literal and symbolic) by demarcating, diving, and separating people, places, and objects whose proximity might otherwise be troubling." She is saying that the public bathroom has boundaries so dirt doesn't spread and in order to achieve this we must be concealed from one another. Concealment also leads to
