Yasmin Ahmad English 160 Mary Hibbeler 11-6-12 Artistic Appropriation is Acceptable The issue of appropriation art has had great debate on whether it is acceptable or not. Artistic appropriation is when a person borrows and uses another’s work and claims that work as their own. The topic of artistic appropriation is very controversial and there have been various incidences where it has occurred. One incidence happened in 1991 SST Records released a CD by an artist named Negativland that was called "U2". It was a tape-collage album that used parts of another artist’s U2’s song called "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." U2's label record Warner-Chapell and Island Records sued SST Records for violating trademark laws. Similarly in 2004 DJ Danger Mouse made an album called The Grey Album that remixed Jay-Z's The Black Album and The Beatles The White Album . He was sued by EMI Records who controlled the sound recordings for The Beatles. Many argue that artistic appropriation is not acceptable because it is not creative, it lacks originality, and it’s a form of stealing. I disagree and believe it is creative and it is not stealing if a person has gained permission to use it or buy the rights for it. Artistic appropriation is acceptable and an artist must get permission especially if it is sold for profit. The argument that people believe artistic appropriation is not creative because they believe art should always be original and unique. I believe artistic appropriation is creative, art in a way feeds off itself, a piece of art or song is always being influenced by others before them. I believe it is impossible to not be influenced because of so much information and inspiration

around us. The growth of technology also gives a way for art to be readily available. A lot of people would not have thought of putting different songs or sounds together to make something new without this knowledge or influence around them. For example in the DJ Danger Mouse incident no one would have thought that putting together Jay-Z song and The Beatles song to make something new would turn out good, but it did and many people liked it.
