Hannah McDonald Pre-Reading Assignment First Class—GCO 2013 “Engaged Pedagogy” by Bell Hooks a) Looking at engaged pedagogy as a teaching method has opened my mind to more interactive forms of learning. After 17 years of education, I have finally been able to evaluate the methods of teaching that have been most effective for me as an individual and as it turns out, engaged pedagogy has been the prevailing method. A good education is one that takes acquired knowledge and allows the individual to apply what they have learned in class to outside experiences. The first teacher to really embrace engaged pedagogy was one that changed my career as a student; Mr. DellaRovere, my high school history and Current American Affairs teacher enabled progressive communication between students, remaining unbiased and encouraging participation. Even the quiet students began to speak up and feel comfortable expressing themselves because they knew they would get constructive feedback; hearing yourself and others talk creates an exchange of ideas and opinions while also allowing self-evaluation because hearing yourself express how you feel is a great way to practice articulation of ideas, enabling one to spread them in the future and embrace social change.
