Communications 118 February 9, 2012— Goffman Lecture notes The first paragraph of Goffman’s reading can be summarized by saying that how an individual speaks is affected by who they are and where they come from. The second says that not only do socioeconomic ties affect speech behavior, but many more properties do such as word pronunciation, sentence arrangement and other linguistic factors. The third says that psychological and linguistic factors may not be enough to fully understand why people speak the way they do. To fully understand how one is expressing themselves through speech, it’s important to look at their gestures as well as their tones and how well they engage the other person in their conversation. To further elaborate on how one communicates, it’s important to look at situational factors, not just social and linguistic ones, because they elaborate on how well they can express themselves in their social situations.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
