Metamorphism is recrystallization in the solid state- it changes without melting Recrystalization occurs because of changes in temperature, pressure, and chemical composition of the fluids that flow through them New minerals form as a result of metamorphism. The properties of the original rock are completely changed. The growing minerals create a new texture. The environment in which they grow influences these changes. Metamorphism takes place deep within the earth’s crust Plastic deformation happens under high temperature and pressure. Grains recrystallize under unequal stress or by flowing like plastic Metamorphism begins when the temperature exceeds 200 degrees At these temperatures, the minerals become unstable As temperature increases, reaction rates increase Different minerals are in equilibrium at different temperatures Rocks begin to melt at 700 degrees Rocks are exposed to heat if they are proximal to igneous intrusions- contact metamorphism Deep burial increases a rock’s temperature Temperature increases 15 to 30 degrees per each kilometer of depth in the crust Regional metamorphism is when metamorphism happens over a large area An increase in pressure drives chemical reactions and produces new minerals with closer atomic packing and higher densities Temp and pressure combined determine the degree of metamorphic change Low grade metamorphism is between 200 to 350 degrees and relatively low pressures Medium grade metamorphism is between 350 to 550 degrees and moderate to high pressures High grade metamorphism is at temperatures above 550 degrees and high pressures Fluids aid in the redistribution of elements. H2O and CO2 break down and provide a separate fluid that migrates from one place to another. Detached ions
