Bridgett Hawkins25 October 20Assignment 7Within the past decade the LGBTQ community has seen an increase in social acceptance, the pinnacle of which was the Supreme Courts decision to require all states to grant same sex marriages. Despite this landmark decision and a general increase of acceptance there is still a long way to go in the fight against homophobia. Homophobia is painful to the entire LGBTQ population, but is perhaps most painful to the LGBTQ children and teens. It is estimatedthat LGBTQ youth are 4times likely to seriously consider suicide, to make a plan for suicide, andto attempt suicide than their peers (Green et al., 2019). This statistic speaks volumes to the addedpsychological stress endured by the young LGBTQ community compared to their peers. Seeing the growing trend in LGBTQ youth suicide, Councilman Joel Burns, as a member of the LGBTQcommunity himself, was moved to speak out on this issue. Councilman Burns’ speech was quite moving and could in many ways change how a young LGBTQ individual feels about themselves as well as how an intolerant adult feels about a young LGBTQ individual.
