The Outline of Who We Are - Defined by Gender as a Social Structure? Taryn O’Flynn Sociology 213 Does where we come from explain our values? Do our friends and family have an influence in what shapes our personality and the decisions we make? Is where we go to school or where we work define what our thoughts on society are? What really shapes us as people and members of society? I would like to spend some time looking at how gender and sexuality are a large part, if not the most integral part of making us who we are and by looking at gender as a social structure can help define. Gender has been a term, a thought, a “theory” from the beginning of time. But for one reason or another, in recent years, gender has separated itself from the traditional view of sex (male or female,) and has become centered on ones masculinity or femininity rather than on anatomy. I think it’s clear to most of us that gender is more than just ones masculinity or femininity, but has gender become a way a person describes how they are different from everyone else? I believe gender has become more of a sense of identity, and a way for one to feel different and complete in the midst of what can be a chaotic society. Gender is more than just being physically male or female (one’s biological sex),
