Intro to Music Chapter 17: Romantic Opera (1) Romantic Opera a. Important theme was the surpassing of artistic barriers b. The idea of combining music with poetry and other forms of literature made perfect sense to Romantic composers and their audiences c. Opera was also affected by another Romantic theme which was the celebration of music as the most profound art (2) Early Romantic Opera a. Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) i. He established the style and form of Italian Romanic opera; this was called bel canto opera because of its glorification of beautiful singing b. Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) i. Dominated bel canto opera after Rossini retired; Made more simple, sentimental arias and action music; he wrote more than 60 operas c. Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) i. Today he has seen as the most refined of the three early bel canto composers; he wrote fewer operas than the others and his most beautiful arias have a unique Romantic sheen; his finest work was titled “Norma” d. Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826)
