Hannah McDonald Krista Harper Anthropology 106 13 April 2012 Subsistence and Food Systems Throughout human history, groups of people find different methods for survival; just recently (in the past 100,000 years), people started domesticating their sources of nutrition. Today, this is known as agriculture, which is quite different from the former (or less often used) process of hunting and gathering, which Jared Diamond describes as possibly one of the worst mistakes that human kind could have made. He explains his reasoning a few ways, one of them being the development of agriculture and its effects on people’s health. For example, malnutrition developed among people with domesticated crops by living off of starchy mono- cultures as opposed to the hunter-gatherer who had a varied diet. If crops failed, farmers were also at a higher risk for starvation.
