Rowe Leadership Review Chapter 3 Chapter 3 ~ Contingency Approaches Definitions : Contingency Approaches: Approaches that seek to delineate the characteristics of situations and followers and examine the leadership styles that can be used effectively. Substitute- A situational variable that makes leadership unnecessary. Neutralizer- A situational characteristic that counteracts the leadership style and prevents the leader from displaying certain behaviors. Relationship oriented leader establishes mutual trust and respect and listens to employees ‘needs. Task oriented leader primarily motivated by task accomplishment. Telling, Selling, Delegating, Participating styles of leadership Telling style- reflects a high concern for tasks and low concern for people. Selling style- high concerns for people and relationship, Very directive style and gives followers a chance to ask questions and gain clarity about work task.
