Ch. 25 The it-is-probably-rule-control rule : it is probably rule control, if the person knows the rule, the outcome is delayed, or the performance changes as soon as the person hears the rule The deadline principle : if an indirect-acting contingency is to increase or maintain performance, it should involve a deadline What is a deadline? How does a deadline for behaving for a reinforcer produce an avoidance contingency? A set time where a task or behavior has to be performed by. If not done by the deadline, the reinforcer is not received. It produces avoidance contingency by producing an aversive condition that is presented by the same time as the deadline A deadline can specify an immediate (<60 delay) reinforcement, or it can specify >60 sec delay to reinforcement. Is there an avoidance contingency in each case? What contingency responding in each case. Yes, in the immediate, it is direct acting, in the >60, it is indirect acting. Rule: study for an exam and get a good grade. Is there a deadline for this rule? Yes, the deadline is the time of the exam Pay for performance : pay is contingent on specific achievements Knowing the rule, delayed outcomes and performance changing when the rule is first stated tell us the contingency is indirect acting. Why do each of these indicate indirect contingencies? Each indicates indirect acting contingencies; 1. Delayed outcome – if its under 60 seconds, its direct, if later, its indirect.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
