Unformatted text preview: Absorbency is the amount of light absorbed from a given solution. Percent transmittance is how much transmitted color or fraction of intensity given off by a sample. Percent transmittance and absorbency are thus, inversely related. When a solution, at a given wavelength, has nearly 100% transmittance then the absorbency is little to none. When the absorbency is at it’s most, the percent transmittance is at its lowest. The point of most absorption is called the analytical wavelength. For any certain solution or color is the wavelength where the most light is absorbed and the least is transmitted. In the figures and data collected, it was shown all the solutions had different curves and differing points of most absorbance, also known as analytical wavelength. The red dye and the blue dye differed with points of absorbance along with the two other solutions. Figure 1 shows the various points of most absorbance by the red, blue, purple, and KMNO4 as being 500, 620, 510, and 530 respectively (in nm). After measuring all four solutions the analytical wavelength was determined for each, and these all varied according to the color and substance of the solution. For the first solution, red, the analytical wavelength was about 500 nm. This means that the red solution transmitted the lower energy light better than the blue. Blue was around 630nm, which suggested that the blue solution transmitted the higher energy light better than the red solution. The mix (purple) was 510 and fell between both the red and the blue solutions. The KMNO4’s analytical wavelength was 530nm. Each solution had its own specific wavelength, due to its own specific color solution or chemical. Since the color spectrum has the various colors at their own wavelengths, these did not particularly represent the color solution made in the laboratory. These samples were solutions rather than pure light, and did not correspond to the specific wavelength color. By finding the analytical wavelength of a certain solution you can measure the solution at various concentrations to see percent transmittance at the wavelength of most absorption. The analytical wavelength of KMNO4 was measured and 7 used to determine concentration transmittance. At lower concentrations such as 0.00002 transmittance was at it’s highest and at higher concentrations percent transmittance was much lower. This relationship relates to the literature and Beer’s Law, in which his law stated that concentration was directly correlated to concentration.
