Abstract Calorimetry is known as the science of measuring heat. A calorimeter will be used to measure the amount of heat transferred from the two different metals to water. Possessing knowledge of the value of the specific heat of water, one will have the ability to calculate the specific heat of both metal (Aluminum.) The more heat added per gram of a substance, the greater the temperature change, and once a substance is heated, the motion of its individual particles also increases (resulting in an increase in temperature.) The relationship between the heat added, the mass of a substance, and the temperature change it undergoes is known as specific heat. Specific heat is defined as the amount of energy necessary to produce a temperature change of 1°C per gram of substance. Specific Heat = (Energy change in calories.) /Mass in grams Temperature change in Celsius). Purpose The purpose of this experiment is simply to understand the concept of a thermal meter and comprehending the concept of specific heat capacity, applying those concepts, as well as measuring temperatures.
