Abstract Calorimetry is known as the science of measuring heat. A calorimeter will be used to measure the amount of heat transferred from the two different metals to water. Possessing knowledge of the value of the specific heat of water, one will have the ability to calculate the specific heat of both metal (Aluminum.) The more heat added per gram of a substance, the greater the temperature change, and once a substance is heated, the motion of its individual particles also increases (resulting in an increase in temperature.) The relationship between the heat added, the mass of a substance, and the temperature change it undergoes is known as specific heat. Specific heat is defined as the amount of energy necessary to produce a temperature change of 1°C per gram of substance. Specific Heat = (Energy change in calories.) /Mass in grams Temperature change in Celsius). Purpose The purpose of this experiment is simply to understand the concept of a thermal meter and comprehending the concept of specific heat capacity, applying those concepts, as well as measuring temperatures. Apparatus Calorimeter Resistance-thermometer probe Chart of temperature vs resistance for probe Digital multimeter Electric stove or immersion heater Thermometer, liquid in glass type, -20 C to + 110 C Aluminum sample Other metal sample Wire with loop on end for handling samples Two Beakers; 1000 ml Beaker, and 400 ml (or 250 ml) Beaker Triple-beam balance
Background and Theory Heat is energy that flows from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object because of the difference in temperatures. For instance, a hot cup of coffee feels hot to the touch, while a glass of ice water feels cold. This explains illustrates how heat flows from a hotter object to a cooler object when the two are placed in contact. This type of heat flow consists of electromagnetic waves known as radiation.
