John Wilkes Booth John Wilkes Booth, a Southern actor, did the country no favors when he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in the ensuing days of the Civil war (John Wilkes Booth). In his diabolical mind, the Civil war was not over, and by creating chaos, he was giving the Confederacy time to regroup. However, this was not the case. The war was indeed over, and America lost a remarkable leader. Booth originally planned to kidnap Lincoln, to force the release of multiple Confederate soldiers (American Brutus). However, after Lincoln made a speech to support Black’s rights, Booth changed his mind. He planned to kill Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward.
