Unformatted text preview: ics of each, differences Spongy (Cancellous) Bone – strength without weight • Very porous (deceiving appearance as bone is very strong) o The central portion of the bone is filled with bony spicules (spines) or trabeculae (plates)  Spicules – arrangement is similar to that of a sponge • Lots of space between them – occupied by bone marrow and blood vessels • Function: Deal with attached muscles, growing and other bones o Handle strains and stresses by muscles (muscles pull on bones when contracting) o Handle pushing and pulling by bones, muscles and gravity  Act as shock absorbers • 2 major characteristics o Very light in weight  Need to have resistance to compression without large mass of bone o Very strong • Found in the extremities of long bone (long bone = longer than wide, e.g. humerus, femur and radius) o Compact covers cancellous bone at extremities • Red marrow – RBC manufacturing o Enclosed in the bone – does not regress as animal ages  This is unique to cancellous bone (vs compact bone where red marrow converted to yellow marrow as animal ages) o Red marrow found in ends of long bones, ribs, sternum and vertebrate  Rib and sternum marrow – primary source to synthesize RBC 3 Compact Bone • Characteristics: heavy, dense and strong • Found in shafts of long bone and the outside layer of all bones • Composed of Haversian or osteonal systems = Tiny, tightly compacted cylinders (laminated tubules) of bone o Made up of osteons  Each osteon contains • Central canal...
