1. ABSTRACT The experiment was completed in order to learn how to calibrate the eyepiece of a microscope and to find the denier of a round and irregular shaped fiber. The experiment consisted of learning how to calibrate a microscope eyepiece and the procedure for determining the denier of a round and irregular fiber. The results of the experiment show what the denier of the round and irregular fibers are and what the distance is of one division of an eyepiece at the 40X objective. 2. OBJECTIVES (1) To calibrate the eyepiece scale of a microscope using the stage micrometer. (2) To determine the denier of a round polyester fiber from measurement of fiber diameter. (3) To determine the denier of a non-round acrylic fiber from measurement of its area of cross-section count. 3. INTRODUCTION This experiment was important to conduct because it taught how to calibrate a microscope eyepiece and it taught how to find the denier of a round and irregular shaped fiber. The results from this experiment could be used to show procedures on how to find the denier of fibers. This experiment would be important to conduct to show the diameter or thickness of the fiber and the durability of a fiber for whichever textile product that would benefit from the thickness or lack thereof of whichever fiber being used. 4. MATERIALS Microscope Stage micrometer Bottle of mineral oil Small amount of polyester Graph paper Glass slide Cover slip Calculator 5. PROCEDURE This experiment consisted of three interrelated exercises. Exercise 1 1. The microscope was set up and plugged in and focused at 10X and the materials were gathered.

2. The stage micrometer was placed onto the microscope stage and the microscope eyepiece was focused at 10X and then changed to the 40X
