Terry Meehan MGMT 100-E59 Assignment 5 p. 541, #1 Not everyone can afford to invest in the stock market using a personal broker. This fact, along with the rise of the internet and e-business, has fueled the growth of online brokers. Agencies such as Charles Schwab, E*Trade, and TD Ameritrade offer packages for the online trader that are much more affordable than traditional brokers. All three companies offer extensive research capacities, taking into consideration pricing and performance history, financial reports, and breaking news for each stock they track. Each of the three companies may have their own branded name for the way they present this information and their recommendations based on the data, but the information is all the same. The difference in the three is their pricing. Schwab offers a 2 tiered pricing system that is based on the balance held with them and the number of trades conducted per year. Their basic rate is $12.95 per trade for customers who conduct less than 120 annual trades and have a balance less than $1000. The second tiered rate is $9.95 per trade for customers making more than 120 trades per year, or those who hold balances in excess of $1000. The pricing plan offered by Schwab seems best fit to the needs of average investors who conduct casual trades and hold moderate balances. E*Trade offers a slightly more complex pricing system, with 4 price tiers.
