2009004_BSBSUS401 1A WHAT ARE THE NINE “MATTERS OF NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE” AS DETERMINED IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION ACT (EPBC) 1999? The nine “matters of national environmental significance” within the EPBC are: World heritage properties National heritage places Wetlands of international importance Nationally threatened species and ecological communities Migratory species Commonwealth marine areas The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Nuclear actions which includes uranium mining A water resource (in relation to coal seam gas development and large coal mining development). What groups of people are affected by the EPBC? Is your organization included in any of these groups and if so, which one? Those affected by the EPBC include: Landowners Developers Industry Farmers Councils State and territory agencies Commonwealth agencies. Identify seven different business activities that could be considered as an “action” in terms of actions that may have a significant impact on any of the matters of national environmental significance. What, if any, apply to your organization? The sensitivity, value and quality of the environment being impacted upon The intensity, duration, severity and geographic extent of the harm. Whether there are any matters of national environmental significance located in the area of the proposed action Whether there is potential for impacts on matters of national environmental significance at the broadest scope of the proposed action Whether there are any proposed measures to avoid or minimize impacts
If there are potential impacts, how significant these impacts are or would be. Accessing the “Protected Matters Search Tool” on the Australian Government website at: us/legislation/environment-protection-and-biodiversity- conservation-act1999/protected, use the tool to generate a report on the location of your organization to determine whether there are any matters of national environmental significance within your location. Document your findings in your workbook and if possible, print and attach the report generated.
