March 1, 2007 Carisa 6:00pm Border Consciousness In the movie “Spanglish”, the daughter of a lady who works for a white man, is seen as a border crosser. She is aware that she does not really belong with the way of living of the white man even though she lives in his house with her mother. In the scene, the mother asks the daughter to translate for in English to the white man while she speaks Spanish. The daughter does an outstanding job at this. She says everything her mother says, and even in the same attitude. She also translates back to her mother what the white man says in respond to her argument. During this translation they argue about the amount of money the white man gives the daughter for picking up rocks. The mother argues that he over paid her daughter for something so stupid like collecting rocks. The man argues back and says that he didn’t think she was going to find that many and thought it was only fair to pay her as he had said for the rocks since she did take the time to pick them all up.
