They wanted to break conservative style and create something new. o Italian: Wanted to portray true Italian life after the war; no happy endings there. Italian directors were newly freed from Fascist censorship. They sought to portray cinematic realism, focusing on the social, political, and economic themes that the Regime never would have tolerated. o French: The traumatic experience of the war created a generation gap between classic French film makers and the younger generation who set out to do things differently. New wave film makers were linked by their self-conscious rejection of classical cinematic form and their spirit of youthful iconoclasm. Many French directors engaged the social and political upheavals of the era into their work making radical experiments in editing, visual style, and narrative part of a general break with the conservative paradigm. Stress the individual. Make characters’ problems gain universal significance. Emphasis on ordinary people. Style, Visuals, and Narrative. Narrative Episodic; loose storyline; avoid structure & neatly plotted stories; story evolves organically. Randomness
