Corey Mantle Prof. Silvia Kratzer FTV 245, Section 04 February 20, 2008 Italian Neorealism in Nights of Cabiria Three pages; analyze three relevant scenes in the film that demonstrate the cinematic style of Italian neorealism. Federico Fellini’s film Nights of Cabiria is a beautifully brilliant example of Italian Neorealism. The film follows many themes of Italian Neorealism: getting beat down by the world, downtrodden characters such as the prostitute Cabiria, random moments of hopefulness and humor, circularity, an open-ended ending, and an ineffectual hero. Three scenes in this film that best portray the cinematic style of Italian Neorealism are the opening sequence, the hypnotist scene, and the ending sequence. The film begins with Cabiria running around, flirting, and kissing a man presumed to be her lover. She seems very happy and playful without a care in the world, but out of nowhere, in a somewhat randomly comical manner, her supposed lover pushes her into a river and steals her purse. The current of the river pushes her down as she curses and calls out to him with no response. She helplessly begins to drown, when some local boys jump in to save her. They pull her out to the bank where two men try to help her, yet again in a randomly comical manner by flipping her upside down and shaking her limp body to try to get rid of the water in her lungs.
