Editing 10/11/07 Purpose It orders space and time. It gives things it logic [or lack of logic as in  Eternal Sunshine ]. Creates continuity with cuts. Editing Theory Lev Kuleshov o Teacher at Moscow National Film School. o In the USSR there was no money to make films at the school, so they  did editing experiments with old him by re-editing them. o Three shots: #1. A man with a blank face. #2. A bowl of soup. #3. The same man. Audience know that he desires the soup. In the next sequence, they replace the soup with a dead  woman, and now it is inferred that he feels bad for the woman. In the next, they replace the second shot with an infant. Now it  is inferred that he feels paternal toward the infant. o Thus: Editing creates meaning, manipulates reality, effects the way we  understand relationships, and implies spatial relationships  without a master shot. Theory of Montage Power of editing and the power of meaning is created by the juxtaposition of  images. Shots alone have empirical meanings [A: a man; B: a bowl of soup], but
