Great deal of limitations on her. What social reality do these describe? o Despite her elevated position in life, she doesn’t have true freedom. o Also finds herself with more responsibilities, jobs, etc. Novel is  most descriptive in analyzing her family relationship when she goes  to live with her brother-in-law in Virginia. Brother in law wants her to work and contribute to the family. o Brother in law isn’t aspiring to become wealthy, just provide, build a  home, own some land. Even with the brother-in-law, she’s still not at the bottom of society. Works, but doesn’t have a job.
